- Chronicle of Sir Francis Drake: The Dragon of the Atlantic
A long time ago, the sea was full of ships and explorers. One man became very famous: Sir Francis Drake. He was a sailor, a captain, and a corsair. England loved him, but Spain feared him. They called him “The Dragon.”
Drake started his adventures in the Caribbean Sea. He attacked Spanish ships and towns. He took gold and silver. He was fast and brave. Spain said he was a pirate, but England said he was a hero.
In 1577, he did something very big. He sailed around the world in his ship, the Golden Hind. He crossed the ocean, visited many places, and returned to England in 1580. He was the first Englishman to do this. The queen was very happy and made him a knight.
In 1587, he attacked the Spanish port of Cádiz. He destroyed many ships. This stopped Spain from invading England for one year. Drake called this “burning the King of Spain’s beard.”
Then in 1588, Spain sent a big fleet called the Spanish Armada to attack England. Drake helped stop them. He was a vice admiral. His ships were smaller and faster. He helped win the battle.
Before this, in 1586, Drake attacked the city of Cartagena in Colombia. He stayed there for many days and asked for money. The Spanish paid, and Drake left with gold.
In 1596, Drake died near Panama. He was sick and was buried in the sea.
Today, some people say he was a pirate, and others say he was a hero. But everyone agrees: Sir Francis Drake was a great sailor and a very important man in history.
